PKM Weekly - 2025-08-31
A look at the latest Personal Knowledge Management PKM news from the past week.
Hi Everyone,
We are back with another episode of PKM Weekly. Let’s see what is in store for us today.
Obsidian
Shiny new things
This update introduces a new migration assistant for Obsidian Sync. This tool will enable you to perform migrations for your remote Sync vaults, including encryption upgrades, and, in the future, the ability to switch regions. Learn more
Obsidian occasionally upgrades Sync encryption to maintain the highest security standards. If an encryption upgrade is available, you will see an option titled "Upgrade vault encryption" in Obsidian Settings → Sync.
Improvements
We have added in-app checks for plugins known to cause issues with Obsidian 1.9:
Commander v0.5.3 caused the mobile toolbar to take up the entire screen. This is fixed in the latest version of the plugin, so you just need to remember to update.
The "Image Toolkit" plugin causes issues with the display of Obsidian's menus. Once there is a new version of this plugin available, it can be re-enabled.
Drastically improved the performance of the Search view.
Obsidian Bases + Web Clipper = The Perfect Research & Learning Pair
Wanderloots walks through how to build a source Base using the New Obsidian Bases Plugin + the Obsidian Web Clipper Browser Extension.
Combining the organisation of Bases with the capture element of the Web Clipper Extension creates the perfect hybrid for researching and learning, all in the place you are already taking your notes in.
The Web Clipper extension lets you customise templates for different websites to automatically organise the sources you're saving in a format that is perfectly compatible with Obsidian Bases.

Core Insights for Obsidian Beginners - Having used Obsidian for 2.5 years, I want to share some fundamental "principles." These come from my experience—you don’t have to follow all of them. But I personally find them extremely useful for quickly getting familiar with the Obsidian (and notetaking).
Review of 6 AI tools for Obsidian with their pros and cons - Like many of you, I've been on the hunt for the best AI tool in Obsidian that can help with improving my productivity. I focused on plugins and helpers that feel built-in: side panes, inline edits, hotkeys, and minimal tab-switching. Each has its own pros and cons - depending on whether you want an editor, a chatbot with your docs, or a workflow automator.
Capacities
Group-by features are coming soon to the stable Version?
There have been a few rumours and comments circulating about a great Group-By feature coming soon to Capacities. Given that it seems most PKM apps are either adding this or have already done so, it seems to be a no-brainer for Capacities to add this feature too.
I have no idea when this may (or may not) be implemented, but I am sure we will find out soon enough.
Structured Notes vs Blank Slates: Typed Note-Taking in Capacities
This article examines two key paradigms for digital note-taking on the Capacities platform: structured notes and blank slate notes, highlighting how each serves distinct cognitive and creative needs.
Structured Notes emphasise order, clarity, and systematic knowledge-building through outlines, bullet points, templates, and frameworks such as Zettelkasten. This approach is ideal for research, project management, coding, and detailed study notes, as it enhances recall, enables quick searchability, and leverages techniques like active recall and spaced repetition.
Blank Slate Notes prioritise creative freedom, starting from an empty page and allowing ideas to emerge organically. This style fosters nonlinear thinking, brainstorming, and mind mapping, but may lead to challenges in organisation and retrieval due to its inherent chaos.

This Tana AI Agent Took Over Organising My Second Brain
Build an AI agent in Tana that automatically organises your voice notes into tasks, ideas, and projects without any manual sorting.
Ever notice how "capture everything" quickly turns into "now I have 100 things to sort through"?
If you're anything like a lot of my clients they have a million ideas and thoughts through the day but hardly have time to sort them all out and get them to the right place. So I built an AI Agent in Tana that takes voice notes and automatically tags & organises them with one click. Imagine getting to the end of the day and hitting a button in Tana and your AI Agent organises everything in less than 30 seconds. See more
